Colour-stable solar protection

Reduce solar energy, glare and harmful UV while creating a rich factory-tinted appearance

3M Color Stable Series Automotive Window Tint Film rejects up to 57% of the total solar energy coming through vehicle windows to help keep the vehicle cool and protect occupants from harmful UV rays.

The Color Stable film rivals tinted factory glass in its rich appearance. Nano-carbon is dispersed throughout the thickness of the film to provide years of performance with no chance of the film turning purple.

The series is available in tint levels that can block up to 95% of visible light entering the vehicle, helping provide privacy for passengers and valuables. It also significantly reduces glare from bright sunlight.

Important series update: 3M recently updated the Color Stable Series with IR-rejecting ceramic nanotechnology. Instawraps now carries the updated version, which may have slight differences compared with the previous series.

Application Guide

Automotive Window Tint Installation Guide

1. Prepare the Windows

  • Clean the Windows: Start by thoroughly cleaning the windows with an ammonia-free glass cleaner. Avoid products with ammonia, as they can interfere with tint adhesion.
  • Use a Razor Blade: Scrape the glass with a razor blade to remove any dirt, dust, or adhesive residue, especially along the edges.
  • Wipe with a Lint-Free Cloth: After cleaning, use a lint-free cloth to dry the surface completely and remove any remaining particles.

2. Measure and Cut the Tint Film

  • Measure the Windows: Measure each window and cut the tint film slightly larger than the window dimensions. This will allow you to trim the film precisely once it’s applied.
  • Pre-Cut or Use Templates: Some tint films come pre-cut, or you can use templates for a more straightforward application, especially for rear windows or irregular shapes.

3. Prepare an Installation Solution

  • Mix a Slip Solution: Use a spray bottle to mix water with a few drops of baby shampoo or dish soap. This solution helps the tint slide and adhere smoothly without sticking immediately.
  • Label Your Bottles: Clearly label the bottle to avoid confusion and ensure a consistent application.

4. Apply the Tint to the Window

  • Spray the Window with Slip Solution: Spray a generous amount of slip solution on the inside surface of the window. This layer will allow you to position the film accurately.
  • Peel and Position the Tint: Carefully peel the backing from the tint film and spray the adhesive side with the solution to prevent it from sticking prematurely. Position the film on the wet window surface.
  • Align and Adjust: Adjust the film until it’s in the right position, using the excess around the edges as a guide.

5. Smooth and Secure the Film

  • Use a Squeegee: Starting from the center, use a squeegee to push out the slip solution and air bubbles, working toward the edges. This ensures the film bonds properly and reduces streaking.
  • Work in Small Sections: Divide the window into sections for better control, using even pressure to secure the film smoothly.

6. Trim Excess Tint

  • Careful Trimming: Use a sharp utility knife to trim any excess film around the edges of the window. Apply light pressure to avoid damaging the glass.
  • Seal the Edges: Press down along the edges to ensure a good seal, which prevents peeling and water intrusion.

7. Final Inspection and Drying Time

  • Check for Bubbles: If you notice small bubbles or creases, use a heat gun on low to medium heat to smooth them out carefully. Avoid overheating.
  • Allow Time to Cure: Avoid rolling down or cleaning the tinted windows for at least 24-48 hours to let the adhesive bond fully.

Handy Tools and Supplies for Window Tint Application

1. Essential Tools

  • Squeegee with Soft Edge: A soft-edge squeegee ensures smooth application without scratching the tint film.
  • Utility Knife: Use a sharp utility knife for precise trimming. Replace the blade as needed for clean cuts.
  • Spray Bottle: For the slip solution, a quality spray bottle is essential. Make sure the spray is even to prevent oversaturation.

2. Cleaning and Preparation Supplies

  • Ammonia-Free Glass Cleaner: Essential for a clean surface without leaving residues that can interfere with the tint adhesive.
  • Lint-Free Cloths or Microfiber Towels: Ideal for drying the windows and wiping down any excess solution without leaving fibers behind.
  • Razor Blade or Scraper: A razor blade removes any embedded dirt, stickers, or adhesive residue, which is crucial for a flawless finish.

3. Tools for Removing Air Bubbles and Wrinkles

  • Heat Gun: A heat gun can help stretch and set the tint film, especially on curved windows, and remove any stubborn bubbles.
  • Air Release Tool: Use a small pin tool to gently pop any tiny air bubbles trapped under the film without leaving noticeable marks.

4. Application Helpers for Curved Windows

  • Heat Forming Tools: For heavily curved rear windows, tools like a heat gun and shrink wrap can help you shape the film to fit perfectly.
  • Wrap Glove or Tint Glove: This glove protects the film from fingerprints or smudges as you press and smooth it into position.

5. Post-Installation Tools

  • Edge Seal Tape (Optional): Useful for edges or areas that may be exposed to moisture, ensuring the tint stays in place.
  • Tint-Safe Detailer or Cleaner: Use a window tint-safe cleaner to keep your tint looking fresh and clean without damaging the film.
